“Tunesday”

Straight from the journals and mouths of my students today…

Our journal prompt: Write about what might happen if you had hands on your legs instead of feet.

“My hands are going to be on my legs. And my legs are ging to be on my hands. And my foot is going to be on my head. And my shos would go on my hands.” (Not sure why your foot is going to be on your head, but yes, let’s go with that. Ha :))

“If you didn’t hav feet. I widt wock on my hands. I would wash my hands. It would be rle ese to klim a tree. I would be like a mance and a cliaplr. It would be eses to swim to.” (Translation: If you didn’t have feet. I would walk on my hands. I would wash my hands. It would be really easy to climb a tree. I would be like a monkey and a catepillar. It would be easy to swim too. Yes, I had her read it to me.)

“You might not be trying. You might not be flechsabl. You might not be hrdragradid. You might be tird.” (Translation: flexible, hydrated, and tired. I asked her about being dehydrated and she said, "well it would be really hard to drink water if you had to do it with hands where your feet should be." Well played my dear, you're a genius.)

“If I had my hands on my legs I would fall down. Then I would be a ailen then evrey one would scream. And your hands cant fit in your shoes then where would your feet be. And how would you run and play games and how would you wrigt and how would you sit down and how would you eat and drink that would be hard? Then how would you play basketball and football and baseball and golf and bowling and how would you read and how would anamals walk.” (This kid and his rants. His last paragraph literally had no punctuation in it at first, he just gets so excited that he started rambling. I die reading it every time... so precious.)

“If I had hands on insted of feet I would be doing a handstand. It would hert my hands. I would rech to my fingers. It would be hard to coler with feet.” (I was surprised at the number of kids who were concerned about how they could color with hands on their feet... bahaha)

“I would be crepee. Yo could say it’s a costum. You can’t woke. You can’t hooled anything.” (Halloween is on their little brains already. Sheesh.)

Also today, we read a story where a little boy (Peter) writes a letter to a girl named Amy and invites her to his birthday party. It’s a big deal because he’s worried about what all his little bro-friends will think and then the letter gets lost and all sorts of things happen. But in the end (SPOILER ALERT!) Amy comes to the birthday party and Peter is all happy and the story ends when he “makes a very special wish of his own and blows out all the candles.” So in one of my small groups (3 girls and 1 boy) I asked, “what do you think Peter’s special wish might be?” And the one dorky little boy, without hesitation grins and says, “I think he wished that when he grows up he might marry Amy.”

Needless to say, I melted. What a cutie-patootie.

Today was another long, successful, and funny day in student teaching. My students took a lot of tests, did a lot of reading, and were generally funny. I hope you enjoyed their journal entries as much as I did :).

Summary from the teacher lady: day 2.
The hardest part of student teaching is the timing. It generally takes my students way (WAY) longer to do things than I imagine. Possibly because we always review things and spend what seems like ridiculous amounts of time reviewing and practicing general social skills, expectations, and classroom management things. (That’s the key to being a strict and effective teacher lady, I’m convinced.) Possibly because I sometimes forget that they are still just little kids. Innocent little 7 and 8 year old who take time to do things like read and think and work. Timing will come with more practice, but today it seemed like I was always running about 4 minutes behind ;).  More updates on that as time progresses.

Until tomorrow…
Peace, love, and quotes that I will someday write a hilarious book with,

You Are What You Eat

 … and I am a sweetie. ;)

This semester of student teaching has truly been a testament to the adage “you are what you eat.” The amount that I eat, sleep, and workout has drastically changed in the past few weeks. For those of you who don’t know, I have one of the biggest cases of sweet tooth syndrome, possibly ever. And it seems like every.single.day. in elementary school is someone’s birthday. I’m not sure how that’s even possible, considering there are only about 115 students/teachers/faculty total in my school. It’s like cookies and cupcakes and other sugary things magically appear on my desk every afternoon. I can’t do it. I love stupid sugary things, but then I’m not hungry for actual food. And with track starting to pick up at the height of student teaching, it’s catching up to me. My body feels like BLEHH.

In regards to sleep, I really am making an effort at getting more. I’ve upped my normal sleep schedule from 6 hours every night to about 8ish hours. It’s awesome. Although I still wake up after 6 hours of sleep… it’s like my body is saying, “get up self! It’s time for the day!” And to that I say, “NO! MORE SLEEPS!” It’s wonderful.

Again, with regards to working out, I have to repeat that I have never been more mentally tired in my collegiate career. However, this is a HUGE difference from being physically exhausted, which I have been many, many, manyyyyy times. I’m still adjusting to handling the differences in exhaustion. It’s just time to realize that I can’t do all of the things, although I’m very (SUPER) reluctant to accept that. I do a lot of things still. It’s just hard to accept that I can’t do everything 110% right meow the way that I would like to. Instead, track training is taking somewhat of a backseat because I am facing the fact that right now education and an internship via student teaching is a more worthwhile investment (not to mention I’m paying thousands of dollars to do it!).

And now, because you’re all dying to know, my first day of teaching everything all day long was… good :). Nothing super great, nothing super bad. Most of this is a result of the fact that elementary school is constant madness filled with meetings, assemblies, adjusted schedules and things of the like. So today was a good start. I’m sure that things will only get better as I become more comfortable and as (hopefully!) my teacher finds more things to do in the back of the class! Right now she seems (and must be) so bored! So naturally, she finds things to do and goes a little crazy sometimes when the kids aren’t paying attention. She still today would correct their behaviors, but I’m not too worried about it. I’ve got a few weeks to handle everything! I can’t wait :)

Other exciting things… blurb style.
  • I am in the process of setting up a pen pal program for my kids. It should be pretty cool! They will be writing to another class in… wait for it… Nevada. That’s right folks, the Katerina-Jayna friendship strikes again in yet another stroke of genius! I hope our kids get as excited about this project as we are!
  • I ran my first track work out of the season today and it was hard. Enough said.
  • I just brought all my winter clothes back to school! It has been a brisk few days, and I’m excited to break out more sweater options. Not to mention that it should aid in my quest to not be an outfit repeater. I’m going 9 weeks strong people!!
  • I put up a new bulletin board! I’m on yet another quest to drill sight words into my students’ brains and so I’ve created this beaut. The plan is to leave the board up for the month of October and make it progressively more creepy by adding spider webs and Halloween words such. Yippee!!! I’ll try and remember to record the progress for ya’ll!
  • Finally, tonight I met again with a couple faculty advisors tonight! We discussed another meeting about the education mentoring program! I’m very excited! We are planning a get together/cookie party/information panel/breeze shooting adventure for Sunday, October 20th. (If you happen to be a BC Ed major, look for my charming (annoying) emails soon!)
  • If your name is Cheyann and you creep my blog every night, prepare for a super special shout out in look of some ed major/transfer student help! :) Also, it was super nice to see you this morning!

Aaaaand on that note, I’m off to do some teacher lady planning.
Until tomorrow,
Peace, love, and overexcitement,
Jayna

Bon Jovi

“Woahhhhh, we’re halfway there… WHOA-OH! LIVING ON A PRAYER!”

Guess why Bon Jovi? I’m already halfway done with student teaching!!!!
Which means the best is yet to come… I will have the whole (entire) (ALL OF IT) class starting MONDAY! Every student. Every subject. The whole time. Cripes! Let’s do this!!!

…Don’t worry; I will keep you posted on how it goes. ;) It may very well be madness.

Today’s (FRIDAY!) journal prompt: If you could make a new room in your house, what would it be like?

“I would have a T.V. And my bed would be a tramplen. My picshrs would be spanjbob. I would have a pool. I would have frij.” <- This kid is quiet, but shows more and more personality every time he writes. He is quirky, and I love it.

“If I had a new room I would want a tv. And a bunk bed. And all of the kirby plushies.” <- I’m surprised by the word choice. Plushies (makes me wanna giggle.)

“If I could have a new room it would have a tv and a cawch in my room and a hotub. I would have a beckbed. I would have cande.” <- This boy has a sweet tooth for sure. He’s not the best writer, but I love when he tells me things like this. So sweet. (like his sweet tooth :))

“If I could make a new room in my house it would be a trampaling room. Because I like to jump sometimes I go to my nebrs and they let me jump on theres. And I do flips and me and my brother play egg and we play mummy and we play tag with are eyes close.” <- This student is so entertaining. He’s the one who wrote about bigfoot and about throwing up if he had to walk backwards. I love how he rants when he gets into what he is writing. He’s a quiet boy, so it’s fun to get into his head.

Overall, TVs, pools, hot tubs, and couches were the most popular things that my stsudents would put in their rooms. One even chose a “butten that could teren the foor into an ice scating rake and a roller scating one.” So creative and adorable.

Sorry this post is so late! Oops. I had things to do ;) Until next week…
Peace, love, and 80s throwbacks,
Jayna

A Peculiar Day Indeed

Today is a rather peculiar day… Who am I kidding, every day is peculiar in an elementary school. ;) First of all, it’s a jeans day! As a reward for a school fundraiser, most of my kids get a free dress day and the teachers also get a jeans day. It’s pretty cool actually. I love seeing what the kids wear when they’re out of uniforms. Even the type of jeans they wear shows a lot about their personalities. Also, jeans day is highly convenient because I maybe sorta slept in 13 minutes past my alarm today and woke up to my roommate’s alarm (love you Monica, yous a lifesaver!).

Nextly (new word, second grade level), one of my trouble-makers is gone from school today. Another student left early for a Dr’s appointment. That takes my already small class down to only 15 students, as relieves me of the biggest class distracters. It’s been weird, but a nice break.

The third weird thing about today is that we have been doing an abnormal amount of reading. This is partly because of our preparation for Grandparent’s Day (tomorrow). The kids have spent time making bookmarks and pictures and writing about things they love about their grandparents. Another reason is because my rockstar teacher is introducing another online form of assessment to the students. My students take a star reading test, and today they are practicing a new AR test. The AR test tests their comprehension in reading through asking questions about details in books. It’s kind of cool, although I’ve never seen it done in another SC school.

All in all, it’s mostly a peculiar day because I haven’t had to teach much. And considering that next week I should have the whole classroom, sitting back for so much of the day is weird. But I do get a lot done. Like correcting our journals today… I even had time to jot some good ones down for ya’ll ;)

Today’s prompt was to write about what might happen if you spent a whole day walking backwards.

“If I spent a whole day walking backwards I would barf. A then I would get raely disy a then I would keep on throwing up. A then I would fall down a then I couldnt do anything walking backwards and it would be raely raely boring and I mean super super boring and that would be hard and I bet I could not do it and I cant even walk forward for a whole day my legs would get raly tiered and I would be sweting and that would be hard to get a drink and to eat and you cant sit down.”

“If I spent a hole day walking backwards it might be like. I would invete these gogles so I could see behide me. Then I would get stuff to eat by open the frige with a toy I would hold behind me. The when I come to school I would not bring the gogles that I invetid I would look behide me. And that is what it might be like if I spent a hole day walking backward!”

One of my students asked for the word “somebody.” He had already written some, so I was explaining that somebody is a compound word. I asked him how to spell “body.” And he looked at me like I was crazy and said, “No. I want ‘somebuddy’.” In his head, that’s how the word sounds and how it should be written. Hilarious. These little guys never fail to amuse me. And they are starting to impress me with their writing.

Final Funny of the day.
This morning, a pair of mystery panties was found in the girl’s restroom. UHM, YES. So, none of us are really sure which girl was avoiding getting her panties in a bunch or perhaps ran into a real panty dropper, but the teachers had a good long laugh about it. My bets are on one of the Kindergarten teachers. Elementary school is weird. (and I love it.)

Until tomorrow,
Peace, love, and mystery panties,
Jayna

“What a Blessing”

Is it too late to change my major? Holy moly rocky, please say no. I’m glad that I chose to brag in my blog yesterday because today was definitely not a day to brag about. Math was rough. ROUGH. And it was really one of the only things I taught today (because of our weird schedules in preparation for Grandparents day). I literally just want to bang my head against a wall. There were too many directions, too many kids in all stages of understanding and not understanding and wanting to tell me stories, and circling random numbers and forgetting their simple addition facts and being so oblivious to patterns that I can’t handle it. It was like trying to give one-on-one help to all 17 kids at once. And here’s what my teacher had to say, “what a blessing.” RIGHT. They are, and days like this are. They are learning days. And learning days are downright painful.  (Although on the bright side, one student today said, “I’m getting the hang of this!” He was so proud that he was understanding math. Adorable.)

Crap. I need a drink. And a nap. And a cuddle buddy. Someone help me out here!

Maybe I will have one tonight (all of the above. Maybe a roommate will volunteer to cuddle). But! I also!!! Have plans!!! Because tonight BCU hosts Mside in volleyball. Even though I don’t play anymore, I can’t wait to stop those stinking mustangs back into the ground where they belong (do I sound bitter or competitive?). I don’t think the animosity that I feel for them will ever diminish. Not one bit. Plus I have grown to HATE the color maroon, from high school and college.

Time to be done ranting. Back to being an exhausted student teacher and college athlete. It should be a fun running work out today (NOT).

Until tomorrow,
Peace, love, and BCUVB,
Jayna

Ps- I'm not actually changing my major. Just so that's clear ;)

Pps- One of the 2nd graders in the other class called another kid "buttcheeks" today. So inappropriate, but I DIED LAUGHING.

Flying By The Seat Of My Pants

Like at all times. And (surprisingly) it's going really, REALLY well. Today was a perfect example. I realized last night that I was super underprepared for my lessons today. I had mapped out what I planned on doing this week (last Thursday- eek!), but I also failed to bring home any of my manuals to refresh my memory. So after 5 days, I stepped back into the classroom (okay, trudged. I'm still so, SO tired). I put on some untired eyes, a peppy smile and made it through an abnormal morning filled with unscheduled practices and teacher flexibility. And I was okay with that.

Until my professor showed up unannounced (SURPRISE!) to observe my math lesson. Sweeeeeeet. At the time, I was sitting in the computer lab, overseeing my kid's free time and prepping a social studies test (you bet I'm writing it!). And suddenly, I see my professor walk by, double take and come back. And I'm thinking... Oh crap. Please don't ask for a formal lesson plan, please don't ask for a formal lesson plan, please don't ask for any form of lesson plan!! After returning from the computer lab, I began my lesson on fact families. Literally all I had prepared was a sticky note with an intro (conveniently located in the teacher's manual) and my handy objective written on the board from last Thursday. Boom. Let's do it.

Here are the "went well" comments
"1) enthusiastic 2) lesson pace very good 3) gives specific directions & expectations 4) guides practice 5) knows content & uses academic language 6) children understand fact families! Awesome job"

Heck yeah!! I'm sorry for bragging, but I'm just really excited that this whole future career/student teaching thing is going super well.

In other news, here are some questions from the back of the class...

  • What the heck is going on with the government? Why are we closed? Since my roommate Kat graduated and left me for the west coast again (seriously, can someone please just squish the map up between here and there?!) I am so lost. Politics are not my thing. Neither is government. I'm lost.
  • How am I still functioning on so little sleep? I feel like this shouldn't be a thing. Maybe it's a side effect from living with Grace this summer. (Grace I hope you read this and know why.)
  • Who invented high heels and why did it feel like a good idea to wear mine all of Saturday night? OUCH.
  • How awesome is spring semester gonna be when all I'm doing is running track and finishing up regular college classes? (HINT: it's gonna be GLORIOUS.)
  • When will I actually start studying for the Praxis II? Why do we even have to take that stupid thing? Who cares about pedagogy? WHYYYY??
That's all for now folks,
Peace, love, and Adam Levine,
Jayna

Ps- I'm watching The Voice... Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. Best Show Ever.

Running on 4...

As in 4 hours. Of sleep. BAD IDEA. Although this weekend was so fun (my last homecoming was definitely one to remember!), I was definitely not well rested for today's Diocesan Ministry teacher's conference adventure. We left at... wait for it.... 5:45! (As in AM. Like the morning) Woo!

The conference went well, and the keynote speaker was really entertaining and had a great message. After 12 hours of attempting to be an official teacher lady, I am pooped. Off to bed for this girl! But as another parting gift, I shall leave you with a few photos from the actual homecoming game! Which we won! (I figure that pictures are worth a thousand words, and I don't really have the motivation to write any more words today. Genius.)

Baby Dingus came to cheer on the Chargaz :)

Momma and Daddy came up too!

Shaughn let me pose as the king. Apparently I wasn't very convincing!

A quick royalty pic before being announced at halftime. I'm not saying that I cartwheeled my way out to the 50 yard line, but I'm not denying it either!

 "We came for the applause"

These are two of my favorite underclassmen :) Morgan and Paige are great friends!

It was national pose as a Charger day! Just kidding, but I dressed these two up and took them with me anyway :)

Bonus picture! I found one of my friends, a BCU grad and now employed teacher, at the conference! I swear he's not always a dingus :)

That's all for now folks!

Peace, love, and early bedtimes,
Jayna
